Oil & Gas Resume Keywords
The
Keywords that Hiring Managers Look for in Your
Oil & Gas Resume
Nowadays, as a job seeker, you
need to write your resume for hiring managers as well as applicant tracking
systems (ATS) — especially in the oil and gas industry. The largest
employers are multinational corporations with offices across the world with
thousands of employees. That means that the human resources department does
not have time to read through each resume that is submitted to each of the
dozens of job postings they have listed.
So how do they tackle that
problem? They use an applicant tracking system. The system sends your
resume through a keyword scan and decides if you meet the right
qualifications for the role. The human resources department uses this
program to reduce the number of resumes they need to physically review.
What does this mean? It means you need to ensure that your resume is comprised of the right keywords that the hiring manager is looking for. Let us tell you how.
How to Find the Right Keywords to Tailor Your Oil & Gas Resume:
- Review the job posting in detail. What are the keywords that have been repeated throughout the list of accountabilities as well as the requirements for the role? You can bet these are the keywords that hiring managers and applicant tracking systems are scanning for.
- In the minimum qualifications section, ensure each one of the points listed is addressed in your resume using similar wording. If they are asking for 10 or more years of experience, ensure you state that you meet or exceed that number.
- Mirror the wording, but do not repeat it. If the posting mentions the importance of problem solving skills, make sure to mention that in your resume. Ensure to use the term “problem solving” rather than a synonym like “conflict resolution”. You can be sure the ATS is scanning for “problem solving”, but it may not read “conflict resolution”. However, do not copy and paste the entire line from the job posting directly into your resume. This will not get you any points with a hiring manager.
- When a posting is not detailed, look for other postings from the same company. Chances are keywords will overlap between different roles. You can also look for the same position within a different oil and gas company and base your keyword research from there.
- Another great resource is LinkedIn. Look for current or former employees of the company who held a similar role and mimic the keywords they have used in their profile when describing the role.
- Also read through the company website. This is a great way to get familiar with the internal corporate culture and the language they use. Be sure to mimic the same tone and vocabulary as the company uses to align your resume with their expectations.
